Okonjima Plains Camp
Plains Camp honours the Hanssen’s family cattle-farming heritage with its three-tier accommodation facility of 11 spacious View Rooms, 14 spacious Classic Rooms.
The Hanssens were dedicated to cattle farming until the necessity of addressing escalating livestock losses, combined with the post-independence (1990) recognition of Namibia as a sought-after tourist destination, brought about a transformation for Okonjima. General Information
This place is a DREAM.
“This place is UNBELIEVABLE. My partner and I are genuinely lost for words at how incredible this place is. Everything here is a dream and we didn’t want to leave. They make you feel part of their Okonijma family from the minute you step through their doors, with some of THE BEST customer service I have ever witnessed. A HUGE thank you to CJ, Caroline and Silvlie for being some of the funniest and warmest receptionists/staff we’ve interacted with. Their kindness, humour and care had no limits. The Lodge itself has an elegant rustic feel to it and even strolling through the grounds is an experience in itself. Their breakfast buffet and dinner service was incredibly tasty, offering something new each day. (Some of the tastiest pancakes I’ve ever eaten). There’s nothing that beats eating breakfast, or dinner, whilst watching animals at a water hole. They offer a wide variety of tours and ALL the guides that run them have such wonderful personalities. Felix was hilarious and we couldn’t stop laughing with him and Daniel was extremely informative and went out of his way to make sure we had the best time. The rooms have an excellent view of the plains and you could spend hours, lying on the bed, watching what animals walk past!! PS, a top tip, if you sit very still around the pool, you’ve have some mongoose friends gather round to say hello. We literally cannot fault anything about this place. You simply HAVE to book a stay, or two, or three here!! The biggest thank you to the Okonjima team. We WILL be back.”
Amazing setting
“Amazing. The chalets were lovely, with terraces, right on the edge of the reserve. The food was delicious. The staff tried talking us out of going on an endangered species trip, they would rather we went on something leopard or cheetah related. But there were only the two of us on our trip, plus the guide. We saw a rhino really close to and briefly a young leopard, combined with a lovely sunset location I’m glad we stuck to our guns.”
A must go to place !
“We stayed 2 nights at this amazing place .
We stayed in the view rooms witch are very spacious and comfortable. Lovely view with lots of zebra’s, antelopes, warthogs etc… passing. Well appointed room with 2 double beds and huge bathroom and shower.
They are very well spaced out and you can park right in front. Very secluded
There’s also a nice outdoor space with day beds and comfortable seats .
The main area is a huge space where there’s a restaurant with outside and indoor seating .
Loads of comfortable seating and fireplaces. Very nice decor . The food was probably the best we had in Namibia as well as breakfast. Very varied and fresh. The freshly baked warm muffins in the early morning were to die for !
In the mid afternoon more tasty freshly baked goodies !
There’s a lot to do and see and the guides are amazing especially Alpheous! Thanks for all we saw with you ! A visit to the africat foundation is a must and very informative and the cheetahs and lions are beautiful!! Definitely a must go to destination that’s only 3 hours from Windhoek. The staff are all lovely and very attentive.”
A MUST
“A wonderful return to Okonjima. I do miss the old garden rooms, old house, the ancient warthog and masses of cheetahs….. However, wow what a transformation. We stayed in a standard room. Crazy name for a stunning huge room with fabulous views. Do rename the rooms please! The activities were all exceptional and I do understand why the focus is no longer on cheetah’s, but do hope they have support elsewhere? In their place, leopards dominate. Stunning cats and other wildlife thrives…. Excellent guiding and whilst probably priced slightly higher than other locations; it felt reasonable due to the charitable links. Food was pleasant, breakfast excellent, dinner a mixed bag. A place that must never be missed on a trip to Namibia. I hope it doesn’t expand any further though and lose it’s special quality.”
Amazing experience – loved loved loved it!
“We spent 2 nights here at the end of our Namibian odyssey and are so glad we did – we had a view room which lived up to its name, huge room and bathroom and outside sitting area. Watching the springbok and other animals stroll past our window will live long with me as will the howling of the black backed jackal which accompanied us both evenings we spent here. Staff were super friendly, food excellent and sitting outside near the water hole watching the animals (large family of warthog being the highlight) and numerous birds was excellent. Our guide Denny took us to the Afrikat centre in the morning and on the leopard tracking experience later in the afternoon/evening which result in not just 1 but 2 encounters, the latter a juvenile male he spotted on our drive back to camp. Highly recommended and would love to go back.”

The Okonjima Experience
Spanning 220km² of undulating acacia , mountainous outcrops, and riverine thickets, the Okonjima Nature Reserve serves as a thriving habitat for leopard (Panthera pardus), known for their remarkable adaptability among wild cats.
AfriCat takes pride in maintaining one of Namibia’s longest-running leopard monitoring projects.
Discover more about our Leopard Research initiatives.
These intelligent, solitary predators thrive in high concentrations across the diverse terrain of the Okonjima Nature Reserve. Over the course of three decades, the reserve’s predator research programme has yielded profound insights into leopard behavioural patterns, offering an optimistic outlook for their sustainable future in modern Africa.
A minimum two-day stay at Okonjima, provides the prime opportunity to witness wild leopards in their natural habitats, including those collared for research purposes.
Researched leopard are actively tracked, and their collars prove invaluable in locating and safely returning cats that have ventured into surrounding farmland, where they might be perceived as a threat to livestock.
Situated within the rugged commercial farmlands of central Namibia, the expansive Okonjima Nature Reserve stands as a protected expanse that embodies a diverse ecosystem, encompassing both large and small mammals native to Namibia. Additionally, a significant proportion of the country’s endemic bird species finds refuge within these borders.
Visitors can partake in game drives and guided bush walks, offering an intimate and up-close encounter with Namibia’s wildlife, particularly its most guarded species.
Within the Okonjima Nature Reserve, extensive research initiatives are conducted concerning rare and endangered species, both large and small.
